The Role of the—

- NATIONAL ISLAMIC COMMITTEE ON SCOUTING    

 

The National Islamic Committee on Scouting plays a number of roles in supporting Muslim Scouting throughout the United States.  Chartered by the National Council, the Committee:

 

Serves as an Advisory Committee to the Boy Scouts of America

Supports Local Councils

Promotes Cooperative Contacts

Develops and Distributes Publications

Recruits Chaplains

Provides National Programming

Provides Leadership Development

 

Advisory Committee Functions:

 

Member of the BSA's National Relationships Committee

Member of the BSA's Religious Relationships Sub-Committee

Provides advice on scheduling of national programs calendar issues

Works closely with the BSA's Relationships Division

 

Local Council Support Functions:

 

Assists in membership growth of units sponsored by Muslim organizations

Promotes Islamic religious emblems and awards

Creates opportunities for Muslim youth within the Scouting program

Promotes financial support of local councils

 

Promoting Cooperative Contacts with:

 

National Islamic organizations (i.e. ICOS, ISNA, ICNA, MYNA, UMMA)

Council of Ullama organizations

Islamic Educational organizations

Islamic community at large

 

Develop and Distribute Publications and Materials

 

Literature (examples):

High adventure prayer books

Cub program and activity guides

Other program guides (i.e. "Rehbar-Guide for Scouts Executive.")

Support Materials (examples):

"Scouting in the Islamic Community" brochure

Fact Sheets

Local Council Guide

Islamic Scouting Patches

Recruit Chaplains

 

High Adventure bases

National and International Jamborees

Other events

 

Provide National Programming

 

National Jamborees

Administer Eagle Scout scholarships

 

Provide Leadership Development

 

Philmont Training Center course "Scouting Serves the Islamic Community"

Chairman's Course for local council ICOS chairpersons
